Prevention Board

​Grant​ee Resources: Period of PURPLE Crying®

The Prevention Board is required by Wis. Stat. § 253.15 (3)(a) & (6)​ to make available materials to parents and caregivers of newborns. The purpose of the informational materials is to educate parents/caregivers of crying and fussiness of newborns to prevent abusive head trauma (otherwise known as shaken baby syndrome). 

The Prevention Board has supported the implementation of Period of PURPLE Crying®. PURPLE has two doses for implementation. Dose 1 is typically provided within a month of the babies birth. Dose 2 is provided before the peak of the crying curve, it is the reinforcing messa​ges and guidance.

• Training can be completed through the National Center on Shaken Baby Syndrome or through the Family Resource Professional Development System. 
• If your agency is implementing PURPLE, a fidelity agreement with the National Center needs to be completed. 
• If you agency is implementing PURPLE with Prevention Board funding, reporting is submitted through a spreadsheet. 

Publications:

• Babies Cry, Be Pr​epared: is publication that could be used in conjunction with PURPLE. 
• Dose 2 Period of PURPLE Crying Flip Chart​: is a publication created to assist with delivering Dose 2. Available to agencies with a fidelity agreement and for purchase on document sales​.
  
• The National Center on Shaken Baby Syndrome offers a number of publications that can be purchased with grant funds.
